Discover and Create Sources from Text with Google NotebookLM

Google's NotebookLM has launched an innovative feature that enables users to discover and integrate sources directly within their notebooks. This functionality is aimed at improving the user's capability to find and incorporate additional resources into their documents, thereby enriching the content and enhancing the overall quality of their work.

A key component of this feature is the prominently displayed button labeled "discover sources." By clicking this button, users can initiate a search for relevant additional sources that can be added to their existing notebooks. This process is straightforward; users simply need to click the "Submit" button, which prompts Google to conduct a search for pertinent sources that align with the content of their notebooks. Once the search results are presented, users have the flexibility to choose which sources they wish to incorporate into their notebooks, allowing for a tailored approach to resource integration.

For demonstration purposes, a video accompanying the feature suggests that users can opt to add all available sources at once. This action will subsequently modify the content and summary that is displayed on the main page of the notebook, reflecting the newly integrated information. This feature not only streamlines the process of resource gathering but also ensures that users have access to a comprehensive array of information that can enhance their work.

After users have added the desired sources, they are advised to refresh their notebooks by pressing the F5 key. This refresh action is crucial as it updates the notebook's content to include the newly added sources, ensuring that the information presented is current and relevant. Furthermore, users have the opportunity to customize their notebooks further by adjusting settings and creating new audio overviews. If an audio overview already exists, users can replace it by deleting the old audio file and uploading a new one that corresponds to the updated information in the notebook. This feature allows for a seamless integration of audio content that aligns with the latest updates in the user's work.

In addition to the audio overview functionality, users who have previously downloaded a mind map can also delete it and create a new one that incorporates all the newly added sources. This updated mind map will be displayed within the notebook, providing a visual representation of the information and resources that have been integrated. The ability to create and update mind maps enhances the organizational aspect of the notebooks, allowing users to visualize their ideas and sources effectively.

The "Discover sources" feature is being gradually rolled out to both Plus members and free members of NotebookLM. This means that while some users may not have immediate access to the feature, they can anticipate its availability in the near future. The phased rollout ensures that all users will eventually benefit from this enhancement, promoting a more resource-rich environment for all NotebookLM users.
